3/8 Side Chair, 2023

An experiment in testing the versatility of one material in particular: 3/8” x 1-1/2” flat bar steel.
For this dining chair, the verticals that make up the back as well as the seat and legs are comprised of this 3/8” thick steel. The rigidity of this material allows the seat to remain level even when sat on: A sort of “anti-cantilever” design.
In addition to these mechanical properties, the dimensions of this stock also lend graphic interest. The chair’s profile appears light and unimposing while a 3/4 view exposes the true heft of the material.
